Happy Rezday To Me!

Happy Rezday To Me

Today marks the 11th anniversary of when I first joined Second Life!  I’ve had to switch avatars since then for a couple of different reasons, but I still celebrate May 2, 2004 as my rezday.  To celebrate, I decided to do the “First and Recent” blog challenge that Strawberry Singh posted a couple of months ago.  Now, since my blog is still relatively new, I decided to go all the way back to one of the earliest photos I can find of my avatar in SL.  The photo on the left is from my modeling portfolio, taken in late May 2004.  Back in those days, we didn’t have skins, prim hair, custom animations, WindLight skies or water, sculpties, or mesh to make us look better.  The change over the years has been pretty dramatic!  I tried to replicate the look as much as I could for the “recent” photo, using items that are much more modern.  The actual photo is a whole lot better than can fit in that little square, so make sure to click through to Flickr where I have a full resolution version of the new photo posted.

A World Below

A World Beneath the Waves (Low Res)

I am proud to be an official blogger for the Fantasy Faire, and as part of being that, they have asked us to complete a series of blog challenges or memes that tie into the event.  Today, I’m doing the My New Shiny challenge, which is to blog about a store that you previously didn’t know much about.  I’m so happy to feature meadowWorks, created by Garvie Garzo!  One of the things that I love about meadowWorks (besides the exquisite craftsmanship in their sculpture) is the fact that rather than having the minimum of 2 Relay For Life donation items for the Fantasy Faire, they have a stunning [NUMBER], in addition to also having a Relay For Life “Gotya” (gacha) machine and a one-of-a-kind sculpture in the silent auction!  This scene features 4 different pieces from meadowWorks in addition to a lagoon rock from Mer-chandise Cove, plants from Cerridwen’s Cauldron, kelp from Balderdash, and rocks from Jammin!

The Prince Beneath the Waves

The Prince Beneath the Waves

The Fantasy Faire opened less than a week ago, and has already raised over L$4.4 million for Relay For Life, making it the highest-fundraising event of this RFL season so far!  I am proud to be an official blogger for the event, and as part of being that, they have asked us to complete a series of blog challenges or memes that tie into the event.  Today, I’m doing the Faire Folk challenge, which is to create a character from the Fairelands using mainly items from this year’s Fantasy Faire, and photograph the character in their home sim.

I chose to create a merman and photograph him in the Fairelands Junction sim.  Saiyge Lotus of Balderdash has done an incredible job of creating Fairelands Junction and turning it into an underwater masterpiece this year.  The main component of the avatar – the tail, pauldrons, and wrist guards – are actually not from this year’s Fantasy Faire.  They are part of a limited edition set that was created by Mer Betta and auctioned off at the 2011 Fantasy Faire.  A few days ago, I was shocked to receive appliers from Opal Lei, the Mer Betta creator, to use the tail with the Mesh Project body!  Their other tails at the moment do not have that – it’s a special thing for this limited edition set – but I hope to see more of their tails have that option in the future.

This year’s Faire is well-represented in the avatar, though.  Even~Tide created the body scales, Tir Na Nog created the crown, The Stringer Mausoleum created the horns and eyebrows, Wasabi Pills created the hair, and Empyrean Forge created both necklaces.  Even better, with the exception of one of the necklaces, all of these items are Relay For Life donation items, meaning that 100% of their purchase price is donated to the fight against cancer.

Fantasy Faire ends next Sunday, May 3rd.  Make sure to stop by before the Fairelands are gone for another year!

Fantasy Faire Is Almost Here!

Why I RelayRelay For Life is something that I have been involved with in Second Life for many years now, on many different levels.  One of my favorite RFL events of the year is the Fantasy Faire, which opens tomorrow at 9 AM SLT!  I am proud and honored to be one of the official Fantasy Faire bloggers for this year.  Fantasy Faire has asked its bloggers to do a couple of blog challenges to help foster the community.  This post is Why I Relay.

I relay for many reasons, but the main one is that I can, while so may others can’t.  Like many of us, I’ve had people close to me who have heard the dreaded words telling them that they have cancer.  Some are still with us, but others are not.  One of my good Second Life friends was Madame Maracas.  We lost Maddie to cancer on September 8, 2010.  I have since set up a memorial park in her honor in-world, and enjoy going there to visit and see the photos of her.  I also have an aunt out in California who is currently beating the odds.  Six years ago, she was diagnosed with late-stage ovarian cancer.  She is still with us, and actually I will get to see her and her husband next week.  I can’t wait to talk to her and see how she’s doing.

The Battlemage

The avatar that I am wearing is comprised almost entirely of items from this year’s Fantasy Faire, with many of them being Relay For Life donation items.  In addition, the gorgeous gazebo that I’m standing in is also new for the Faire, and was built by Sharni Azalee, who sponsored, designed, and built the Ichi-go Ichi-e sim at the Faire this year.  Full credits are below!  Since the Faire is not yet open, though, I’m not allowed to provide SLURLs to the sims.  I will go back through tomorrow once the sims open and add those.

The Sole Survivor

The Sole Survivor

This week, Strawberry Singh’s blog meme was to take a photo in Second Life inspired by a television series.  I figured that everyone was going to be doing Game of Thrones, so I decided to do one from one of my non-fantasy favorite genres – reality TV.  Survivor has long been one of my favorite shows, and this photo depicts a Survivor contestant who has won an individual immunity challenge when he needed it most – he made it to the final 7, but was about to be voted out by agreement of two alliances of 3 people!  That means that rather than going home, he’s now the deciding vote between the two sides of the tribe.  No wonder he’s smiling!  In my mind, he plays the rest of the game perfectly, and ends up being voted as the Sole Survivor, the winner of the season.  Full outfit and scene credits are below.

The outfit features items from a few events, but I’d like to highlight the face paint.  It’s by HopScotch and will be available at Fantasy Faire when it’s open later this week.  Because Relay For Life vendors require 100% of sales go to RFL, the face paint won’t be in an RFL vendor, but the creator has said that a part of each sale will be put into an RFL kiosk.  It was what I needed to finish off this character, and it was released at a perfect time!

Faireland Memories (Fantasy Faire Blog Challenge)

Faireland Memories

This year’s Fantasy Faire begins next week, and I’m proud to be one of the official bloggers for it!  One of the things that they have for us to do is a series of blog challenges to get our creative juices flowing.  To get ready for the Faire, I’m doing the first one today – it’s called “I Remember”.  They’ve asked us to think about the past Fantasy Faires and share our favorite stories, memories, transformations, and moments.  Having spent weeks of time in the Fairelands over the years that the Fantasy Faire has been held, I have far too many memories to share, but I do have a few favorites.

I’ll never forget the shotgun wedding (literally) of Alia Baroque and Clover Denzo.  That whole situation never fails to make me laugh when I think about it.  I’ll never forget the first time I saw Elicio Ember’s incredible plants.  I’ll never forget all of the laughs that the Fantasy Faire team had on our constant 24/7 Skype calls as Faire time neared during the years I was on the organizing team.  I’ll never forget the bidding war for the Gate that led to Dark Realms, nearly ending in a magical duel.  I’ll never forget the first time I rode on a dragon-pulled airship.  I’ll never forget the first time I saw a 50-meter-tall colossus avatar, or the first time I spoke to her.

Over the years, I have taken dozens of forms in the Fairelands.  It has been somewhat traditional for me to shapeshift every day of the Faire, and while some have repeated from year-to-year, most are new to utilize the incredible creations of the merchants at the Faire.  One that was worn for most of the 2011 Fantasy Faire, though, is shown in the photo above and credited down below.  The 2011 Faire came at a tough time in my life.  I was making my living from Second Life at the time, but I knew that that was soon coming to an end.  I was living in New York City, trying to figure out what to do and where to go – in fact, a few short months later, I ended up moving to Texas and changing careers completely.  To say that I was a bit depressed at the 2011 Faire would be an understatement.

Then I found Enchanted Mysts.  Built by Alia Baroque, Enchanted Mysts was just what I needed at the time.  It was a place of tranquility when my life was in complete turmoil.  That same Faire, the Forest of Shadows sim had a hunt that rewarded you with different pieces of a satyr avatar.  I quickly became a Satyr using a furset that I bought from one of the Faireland merchants, and spent most of my time sitting on a stump, looking out at the sea.  From time to time, other people would stop by and sit with me.  For this photo, I decided to leave that avatar exactly the way it was back then (although the asset server has apparently eaten the eyes I was wearing then, so I had to use different ones).  The avatar is pre-mesh, so it looks somewhat outdated these days, but I think that most of it has stood the test of time pretty well.  I haven’t found any other sims that have the exact same feel as Enchanted Mysts, but one of Alia’s sims, Athan, comes close.  I’m also using another great pose from this year’s Pose Fair, which is still going on.

I can’t wait to get into the Fairelands once again, but until I do, I’ll keep remembering.

God of the Stadium (Digits Challenge)

God of the Stadium

Frequently, Strawberry Singh posts a Monday Meme/Challenge for other bloggers to participate in.  For the last couple of years, she has posted one asking people certain stats about their avatar.  This year, mesh bodies have come into much greater use on the Grid, so peoples’ numbers are quite different.  I myself just switched to a mesh body a few weeks ago, so I’m still tweaking, but I thought I’d still take part.  Strawberry asked a few questions related to our shapes, as well as what some of our sliders are.

1. Do you currently own a mesh body? If so, do you wear it all the time or just once in a while? If not, skip to the fourth question.
I do – The Mesh Project’s beta male body.  These days, I wear it about 95% of the time – I really only change out of it if I want to wear something that absolutely won’t fit it (short shorts are the worst culprit because of the body’s massive thighs).  I’m still getting used to the body, but I’m enjoying it quite a bit so far.

2. What is your preferred mesh body available on the market right now?
Guys really only have one option as far as premium-quality mesh bodies go – The Mesh Project’s beta body.  I wish we had more choices that were high-quality, but I’m sure they’ll come out eventually.

3. Have you changed your shape since you started wearing the body?
Yes, and since the body is still so new to me, I’m still tweaking my shape.  I’m sure that eventually I’ll get it all where I want it.

4. How do you feel about mesh bodies in general?
I think they’re great!  Having been in SL since mid-2004, I’ve seen so many things change, but the body mesh never had until just recently.  I’m  not a huge fan of the mesh heads that are out on the market, but the bodies are great.

5. What is one thing you would request from designers when it comes to mesh bodies?
I’d love to see more options for male bodies (Slink, I’m talking to you!).  The Mesh Project having a monopoly isn’t the best thing in the long-run in my opinion, but with every day that passes, it will be harder and harder for another male body to creator to come out with their product and gain good market share.

Most people put their slider numbers on the photo, but I didn’t want to do that, so here they are:
Height – 30Body Fat – 5
Head Size – 59
Torso Muscle – 51
Pectorals – 27
Arm Length – 50
Hand Size – 40
Torso Length – 88
Love Handles – 28
Belly Size – 0
Leg Muscle – 61
Leg Length – 76
Hip Width – 52
Butt Size – 50
Saddle Bags – 31

I decided to also post a couple of items from recent events because I’ve been out of town lately so I haven’t been able to blog much.  The hair that I’m wearing is from Damselfly at The Seasons Story, which is always one of my favorite events.  The necklace is new from Mandala at The Mens Dept.  The pose that I’m using (except for the arms, which are controlled by the soccer ball prop) is a great new one from Repose at Pose Fair – JUSTIN 3(*).  I also realized while taking this photo that even though I wear it all the time except when I’m in a fantasy avatar, this is the first photo I’ve posted on my blog that my “THRIVE” tattoo on my neck is visible in.  It’s an old one from AITUI, but I love it.
